EXAMPLE SCHEDULE AND IMPORTANT DATES

(Based on completion of degree in four semesters and May graduation)

The information provided below is a brief overview and does not supplant the information in the CINS Graduate Manual or provided by the Graduate School. It is important that you refer to the Graduate Manual for more detailed information about the program, requirements, due dates, and policies and consult the Graduate School for further information regarding the University’s guidelines for completion and timing of degree requirements.

First Semester

Prior
  • Attend required Orientation.
  • Turn in Form A: Personal Information for Distribution.
  • Consult with Graduate Advisor or assigned Faculty Advisor concerning 1st semester course work and advisability of enrolling in INS 801, 802, and 1 required concentration course.
During
  • If interested in Study Abroad Exchange Program for spring semester, turn in Form J: Request to Study Abroad and complete necessary Study Abroad paperwork by October 1.
By End
  • If identified, choose CINS Program Faculty to serve as your individual Faculty Advisor and turn in Form B: Selection of Area of Concentration and Advisor.
  • If interested in enrolling in Directed Readings (Form H) or Internship (Form I-A) the following semester, see important information below.

Second Semester

Prior
  • Enroll in INS 800 and required concentration courses.
  • Meet with Individual or CINS Faculty Advisor.
  • Turn in Form C: Course Progress, filling in information from 1st semester.
During
  • If not completed, choose CINS Program Faculty to serve as your Individual Faculty Advisor; turn in Form B: Selection of Area of Concentration and Advisor.
  • If planning to study abroad, turn in Form J: Request to Study Abroad and complete necessary Study Abroad Program paperwork by March 1.
By End
  • If interested in enrolling in Directed Readings (Form H) or Internship (Form I-A) the following semester, see important information below.
Thesis or Non-Thesis work:
  • Begin consideration of your final project; decide if Thesis or Non-Thesis option is more appropriate for your work.
  • If different from faculty advisor, select a CINS faculty member to chair and direct your Thesis or Non-Thesis Project.
  • In consultation with your Chair, ask two other graduate faculty members to serve on committee (Two of three committee members must be CINS Program Faculty).
  • Write Thesis or Non-Thesis Proposal.

Third Semester

Beginning (or earlier)
  • Meet with Individual Faculty Advisor.
  • Turn in updated Form C: Course Progress.
  • Last opportunity to enroll in Study Abroad Exchange Program; turn in Form J: Request to Study Abroad and complete necessary Study Abroad Program paperwork by October 1.
Thesis or Non-Thesis Project:
  • Provide committee members with copy of Thesis or Non-Thesis Proposal.
  • Schedule Proposal Meeting with Committee to discuss and obtain approval of your Thesis or Non-Thesis Proposal (Ask members for available times, coordinate with Administrative Associate to reserve 203 Lippincott).
  • At end of Proposal Meeting, have Committee Members sign Form D: Approval of Thesis or Non-Thesis Proposal.

Fourth Semester

Beginning
  • Meet with Faculty Advisor.
  • Turn in updated Form C: Course Progress.
  • Meet with Graduate Advisor to ensure completion of CINS requirements and turn in Form G: Checklist for Graduation.
  • Check with Graduate School (300 Strong Hall) or online, for Graduation information.

Mid- February (check for specific date)

Participation in Graduation Ceremonies:
  • Order gowns, invitations, etc. by due date.
  • If you plan to participate in the separate Master’s Hooding Ceremony in Crafton-Preyer Theatre in Murphy Hall on Saturday morning, you will need to ask a CINS faculty member to perform the “hooding duties.” (Please provide faculty member with sufficient information to rent gown if necessary.)
Mid- April (check for specific date)
  • Have Faculty Advisor complete “do-all” form to obtain permission to schedule exam.
  • Must pass Oral Exam for May graduation.
Two Weeks Prior to Oral Exam
Schedule Oral Exam:
  • Provide Committee Members with completed Thesis or Non-Thesis Project two weeks prior to Oral Exam.
  • Check with Committee Members for approval to schedule Oral Exam.
  • Identify appropriate date and coordinate with Administrative Associate to reserve 203 Lippincott for Oral Exam.
Turn in Form E: Oral Exam Date

Oral Exam
  • Hold Oral Exam by mid-April to meet graduation deadline.
  • Purpose of exam is to determine the student’s knowledge of his/her thesis or non-thesis project and its relationship to the broader scope of indigenous affairs.
  • Exam lasts 1 ˝ to 2 hours.
  • Upon completion of the questioning, the student leaves the room while the committee determines by majority vote, if the exam and Thesis or Non-Thesis project merits a:
    • Pass with honors
    • Pass
    • Non-pass
    • Revisions required
  • Student returns to room to hear outcome of discussion.
  • Committee signs Form G: Completion of Oral Exam and gives to Administrative Associate.
  • Submission of Do-All Form. Ensure Committee Chair has submitted an electronic Do-All form, or has completed a paper copy, with the signature of the Program Chair or Graduate Advisor after completion of Oral Exam. http://www.graduate.ku.edu/~graduate/pdf/applications/Do-all.pdf.
Late April or first of May
  • Absolute deadline (no exceptions) to have paperwork filed with Graduate School for spring graduation.
By End
Submission of Thesis/ Non-Thesis to CINS Program
  • Submit following required documents:
    • Electronic copy of Thesis or Non-Thesis Project to CINS Office
    • Properly signed coversheet
    • Form K: Agreement for CINS Use of Student Materials
  • CINS office will burn a CD of the Thesis or Non-Thesis Project for permanent storage in the CINS office and for possible display on the CINS website.
  • Non-Thesis Projects that include models or presentations must include digital images with their written work for inclusion on CINS CD.
  • Submission of Thesis to Graduate School (See information below and on Graduate School website.)

Additional Notes


Directed Readings and Internships
  • If you are planning to enroll in either a Directed Readings or an Internship the following semester, the Curriculum Committee must approve your outlined proposals before you begin.
  • You must turn in Form H: Directed Readings or Form I-A: Internship Contract, to the Curriculum Committee 30 days before you begin your work.
  • Failure to turn in forms and to obtain approval, as required, will result in the credits not counting towards graduation.
CINS Forms
  • You are required to provide a hard copy of all CINS forms to the Administrative Associate and an email copy to the Graduate Advisor.
